In I C 3 D 2 2, Fredrik Wretman takes over the Art Gallery at Kivik Art Centre with around
twenty small bronze sculptures placed on pedestals in a strict, symmetrical arrangement.
The installation transforms the experience of the space. Wherever viewers find themselves,
they are surrounded by small figures that invite them to form their own associations.
The sculptures contain narratives that move between the myths of antiquity and
contemporary expressions. History meets popular culture, the monumental meets the playful,
and seriousness meets humor. The grand can suddenly shift into the absurd, while familiar
forms can take on new meanings.
Fredrik Wretman, born in Stockholm in 1953, studied primarily at Gerlesborgsskolan and the
Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. With a background in painting, he went on to work with
installation, photography, performance and sculpture.
hroughout his long artistic career, Wretman has continued to move freely between
techniques and materials. Mirrors, water and reflections characterized many of his earlier
installations, while bronze sculpture has gradually come to occupy a prominent place in his
practice. Wretman’s smaller bronze sculptures began to emerge in 2012 and bear traces of
both his experience in drawing and life drawing, as well as historical and contemporary
references. The result is a visual language in which humor and reflection remain in constant
proximity.
Three-dimensionality is also a recurring element in Wretman’s artistic practice and a point of
departure for I C 3 D 2 2. In addition to the bronze sculptures, the Art Gallery presents ten
images using 3D technology, viewed through 3D glasses provided on site. In this way, the
three-dimensional moves from sculpture to image and back again.
I C 3 D 2 2 is a smaller version of Fredrik Wretman’s acclaimed exhibition at Artipelag on
Värmdö. At Kivik Art Centre, it encounters a new space and a new context.
Fredrik Wretman has exhibited both in Sweden and internationally, and his work is
represented in collections including Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Gothenburg Museum of
Art, Malmö Art Museum and the Public Art Agency Sweden. He has also worked as a
professor and teacher at institutions including Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and
Design and the Royal Institute of Art.
