This summer, Kivik Art Centre turns its attention to industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) as a
material, an idea, and a resource. Through this year's temporary project, Beyond Concrete – Nature as a Building Matter, we explore the possibilities of hemp at the intersection of art, architecture and
nature
With its historical roots and contemporary environmental qualities, industrial hemp offers new
perspectives on how we build, create and relate to the spaces we inhabit. Its technical properties,
ecological benefits and aesthetic potential make it a compelling material in the search for more
sustainable ways of shaping the future.
The project brings together artists, architects and material specialists with diverse perspectives and
approaches. Architect and artist Petra Gipp presents the site-specific work BORDER, exploring
questions of movement, belonging and human presence.
Clara Norell, construction engineer and
founder of Svensk Hampaindustri AB, contributes expertise in industrial hemp and presents 7
SIBANNAC, a large-scale hemp labyrinth investigating mathematical, spatial and ecological
relationships.
Architect André Pihl presents CELLA, a sculptural pavilion that explores the relationship between
body, space and material, while artist Johanna Schartau presents Memories and Their Shifts –
images woven onto hemp paper alongside models made from hemp-lime, where memory,
storytelling and materiality converge.
Together, the participants explore how bio-based materials can inspire new ways of thinking about
art, architecture and sustainable building. The project moves between research and practice,
experimentation and experience, and between the artistic and the built environment.
Drawing on Kivik Art Centre's sculpture park, exhibition hall and surrounding landscape, the project
creates opportunities to test ideas at full scale and encourage encounters between different
disciplines. Beyond Concrete – Nature as a Building Block is an invitation to explore the materials of
the future through the perspectives of art, architecture and landscape.
